Finale

Moody
During the first few minutes of the film I thought to myself "this is going to be crap" -- it looked like it was going to be incompetent cheese like Argento's rather unfortunate "Mother of Tears" -- but I was pleasantly surprised. As the plot began to clarify itself, it wound up becoming an effective piece that was very moody and suspenseful. This is definitely a film for those who prefer a horror movie with a growing sense of dread over special effects and bodycounts. Enhancing the film's effectiveness, although it was obviously low budget, some (not all) of the performers, particularly the lead, were actually quite good. I was particularly impressed by the direction. It was filled with lots of creative shots and movement which helped maintain a tense mood throughout. Whenever the director got creative it worked, instead of coming off as self-conscious garbage like Crank. It reminded me of directors from the 70s who cared what the film looked like, like Jean Rollin before he...

A true gothic gem despite the budget
I really liked this movie -- per the director, John Michael Elfer, "Finale" is something of an homage to movies like Dario Argento's 1977 "Suspiria," but there's a lot more going on here than just that. There are (and I think this is quite deliberate) elements here of a great many fine movies, not just the horror / giallo hybrids that Argento became famous for, but also Mario Bavo's gothic masterpieces, Clive Barker's better movies, and even Robert Wise's superb and still-scary 1963 film, "The Haunting."

I liked "Finale" so much that I did a little research, and found this very revealing comment by the director, John Elfer:

"My oldest brother hanged himself when I was 12, and my mother retreated into grief-stricken denial and paranoia, blaming his death on the planned sacrifice of a demonic cult. I wrote FINALE to face my demons, telling the story from her perspective.
My team landed grants from Kodak and Panavision, then set out for the post-industrial...

Let's be honest, here.
I'd like to start by saying thanks to all you reviewers who marked this 3/5 and up. You really had me believing I would be missing out on the chance to watch a quality, low-budget film (yes, the two can exist simultaneously), instead...I feel compelled only to review this so that others don't fall into the same trap.

That being said, let's make this quick and easy. The script is terrible-with a capital 'T'. The acting was poor-on everyone's part; just because you nail a line here or there, or pull off the right expression that is actually called for in the moment, that does not forgive an hour and a half of mostly missing the delivery. The story/theme/plot...well, I've seen some combination or another a dozen times. The only good things to come from this film? The director and the effects artist(s). The director has talent-that's obvious- interesting shots, a good eye for drama, but his vision is clearly too grand for the budget. The demon and the effects used to portray...

The Guild: Season 3

Felicia Day... What else can I say?
The third season of The Guild was as good or better than the prior two seasons. For those of us who enjoy watching it on our TVs, this is the perfect way to get it, though I have to admit, I did watch it online this season, I just couldn't wait to see it.

I think that buying the DVD is a great way to show support for Felicia and all of her cast mates. Plus I like the idea of supporting something that hasn't sold out to the commercial industrial complex... oh, wait... didn't she make a video about that?

Anyway, Felicia is awesome and I just love her work, please make more!

The Guild getting better every season.........
Season Three of The Guild was so great. Wil Wheaton was a Great addition to the cast this season. Zaboo's psycho girlfriend Riley (or as Codex would refer to her "The Stupid Tall Hot Girl") is worth the purchase alone. You don't have to be a gamer to enjoy The Guild, though it doesn't hurt. Even if you're a little bit of a nerd you'll love this dvd. And let's face it, we all have a little nerd in us. Buy it, buy it now I say!!!!

This product reviewed by a nerd supreme.

LOVE THE GUILD!!
This season was even more complex and entertaining than the prior two! With the additional of Will Wheaton and the Axis of Anarchy we suspensfully waited for the next episode each week and Felicia did not let her fans down, she did a great job with this one. Buy this series, it's a great way to support the little guy and to show appreciation for Felicia and the entire cast and crew of the guild.

Owl & The Sparrow

Surviving on the Streets of Vietnam
"The Owl and the Sparrow" takes place in a small Vietnamese village. Ten-year-old Thuy (Pham Thi Han) is mostly confined to working in her uncle's bamboo factory. This changes when she runs away to Saigon. Thuy must come to grips with the challenges of daily survival and becomes part of an interconnected relationship with beautiful flight attendant Lan (Cat Ly) and lonely zookeeper Han (Le The Lu). To avoid the authorities and her strict uncle tracking her down, Thuy must summon all her cleverness and determination in her attempt at lasting happiness.

The film is somewhat predictable but is remarkable in its feeling of hope. Young Han is immediately endearing. Though she elicits sympathy, we admire her independence and ability to survive day to day in the crowded streets of Saigon. The film starts to feel contrived when the two characters Thuy meets merge so neatly. Though we get a sense of Thuy's less-than-ideal existence, director Stephane Gauger downplays...

I have watched it several times.
It is a nice heartwarming movie. There are some moments where you may need to have a box of tissues handy. I have been to Vietnam and specifically Saigon (HCMC). There are many kids on the street begging and selling. They are the cutest kids you'll ever see and it breaks your heart to see their conditions. This movie is well worth watching. It is more interesting than most of the crap from Hollywood these days.

The Most Wonderful Movie
The Owl and the Sparrow is the most wonderful movie I have seen in years. Romanticized? Yes, but why not? The humanity and compassion of the perfect cast is the message, and our need for connection and family. Subtitles - ok, get over it. See this movie.

WWE: Extreme Rules 2010

The Extreme Aftermath Of WrestleMania
Gauntlet Match: Big Show & The Miz vs. John Morrison & R-Truth, M.V.P. & Mark Henry, Hart Dynasty - Just like the Royal Rumble, Miz had to insult Teddy Long resulting in him getting thrown in a match last minute but since he refused to shut up, Teddy Long made it a 3 team gauntlet match before Show had to force Miz's mouth closed. The first team was Truth & Morrison in a WrestleMania rematch & they had the advantage over Miz before Show tagged in & dominated but Morrison was able to counter Show's chokeslam with a triangle choke but unfortunally couldn't break the hold in time leaving Show & Miz to face the next team. M.V.P. & Mark Henry tried to take advantage of Show being choked out but Miz was able to tag in but left alone to fend them off as Show was on the floor recovering until Show was able to get in one last knockout punch to save Miz & get the victory. The final team was the Hart Dynasty (let by Bret Hart) who picked the bones to gain a tag team title shot the next...

The opening bout was supposed to be Triple H against Sheamus in the street fight but they brawl backstage so it must be postponed. So The Miz and Big Show make their way to the ring after this and The Miz goes off on how he and Show are the greatest tag team ever. He also speaks on a situation that happened with the great Bret hart, Teddy Long goes out after this and announces this match. Just so you know I thought Miz was funny and his reaction when Show puts his hand over his mouth is great. Plus I love that he hates on The Orioles since I lived in Baltimore Maryland, and well other places in Maryland. Don't get it wrong I like The Orioles and all but I love when heels do that. Also I would like to say it is always great going back and hearing Matt Striker on commentary.

Hell Girl: Two Mirrors - Collection One

Happy with this purchase
The item arrived on time and the disc was in great condition. The only thing I have to say, is that I was unaware it was in Japanese, as the first season was in English; regardless I am happy with the product.

Characterization revealed, motives seen, and mean things made pretty
After seeing the result of the first Hell girl, I was wondering what the second season might lead into. what I found was an exploration of some of the people surrounding our Hell girl, some explanations here and there that tie certain events together, and a threat that says that "your loved ones will wander and never know peace" if the covenent was not continued. So, along with a young girl that is explained as things progress, more people with more problems sign on to send people off to Hell - and sometimes without hardcore reasons. Strange, how much vengence can build up in a person.

First, I think I want to address the dubbing notion. i like the subtitled version myself, and I think it hlps out a lot. There are scenes where two people may be talking and you get a second set of subs on the screen, but aside from weird things like that you have a lot of clarity. Moreover, the subtitles are done really well and actually seem to translate better than some of the dubbing from...

Definitely worth your time!
I was a big fan of the first season of Hell Girl so when I heard they werent ever going to dub season 2 I wondered if I would still enjoy the subtitled release. The answer is a big yes!! It really wasnt a problem with the subtitles and several characters such as Hone Onma seem more enjoyable in their original Japanese voices. Even though I dont understand Japanese hearing her reactions and tone for voice was great-the English voice actress in season 1 defintiely wasnt as expressive.
The addition of the mysterious Kikuri really kept the show fresh and interesting. In these 13 episodes you really get to know Ai Enma's servants a lot better and that makes the story more enjoyable.
If you enjoyed the first season this is definitely worth your time!!

All Creatures Great & Small: The Complete Series 7 Collection (Repackage)

Tristan Returns
Season seven is a great completion to the series, bringing back Tristan in most of the episodes, and of course James and Siegfried lead the cast. Lynda Bellingham continues the role of Helen, which is my least favorite actor on the show (I enjoyed the prior Helen - Drinkwater - much more). Also some of the old characters are brought back, such as, Granville Bennett, Mr. Biggens, Mrs. Pumphrey and Hodgekin, etc.

The story lines are reminiscent of the later book, with young Rosie wanting to be a Vet, James' bad purchase of netting, as well as, his attempt to build a small greenhouse. Then of course that is topped off, with Helen's bad choice of a carpet from a door to door salesman. Also, we have the young farmer with sensitive nostrils, wearing a red bandana to buy his fish and chips and gets arrested, with James bailing him out. Then we have the famous Wolfie dog that chases off the two young thieves that rob several old age pensioners, as well as many other fine...

Series 7, All Creatures
I purchased Series 7 for my husband, for our 25th wedding anniversary. He has been a fan/collector for many years, and this was the last one left to obtain in our quest for the complete set. He says they are great-they are his one form of relaxation. He was also impressed that the 1990 Christmas special was included-we thought we wouldn't be able to get it at all. I don't think he has been disappointed with any of his All Creatures DVDs-they are all very watchable, and the era they are set in has been portrayed beautifully.
We would recommend it to all watchers of great British T.V.

All Creatures Great and Small, series 7
A delightful conclusion to this touching series. When I first began watching Harriot's stories brought to life on the screen it was often difficult to understand because of the heavy accent of the local farmers and a number of the expressions exclusive to the Brits. However, over time, and often backing up the video to hear again what was being said, one's ear becomes accustomed to the dialogue used in the script. There is so much garbage and triviality on American television, i.e., language laced wih foul language and sex simply to titillate, that I found All Creatures to be most refreshing. The stories are 30 years old now, but this kind of entertainment never goes out of style. I treasure having this series in my film library so that I can return to these stories again and again.

My Dog: An Unconditional Love Story

A must for all dog owners
Just screened this film today. It's wonderful. Heart warming and hilarious. You'll see a side of these actors and celebs you've never seen before.

Who doesn't love dogs?
It's wonderful to see the bond between people and their dogs. It's a beautiful relationship you don't ordinarily find with other animals. The stories portrayed are really heart-warming and sincere. You'll want to go out and rescue a dog after watching this movie.

Delightful film!
It's touching to hear a pet owner speak of their love for their pet. This film is no different, except most of the pet parents are celebrities. This sweet, heartwarming film is a must see for anyone who loves pets!

All Creatures Great & Small: The Complete Series 4 Collection

All Creatures, series 4
I just wanted to say that, yes, James does seem much more serious in this set of stories, but the changes aren't surprising. He's older, he's been through a war and he has a lot more responsibility now. In other words, he's middle aged. But the series is still wonderful and worth adding to your collection. The funny thing is, I remember when I first saw the new Helen on TV many years ago I thought she was so old. It's a shock to see her now and realize that at the time she was younger than I am now. Time passes!

I wanted to answer a comment made by one of the reviewers about the animals used in the series. One of the earlier DVDs has a commentary by Robert Hardy and others that discusses this point. What they did was advertise for animals with the condition being shown in the script and would offer free veterinary treatment for the illness in return for being allowed to film the treatments. When the camera draws in for a closeup showing surgery being done, a real vet is...

Great as usual!
Set after the end of WWII, this series was taped about eight years after the previous series. As one would expect, there are a lot of changes - but the show is still as wonderful as ever. In this series, Carol Drinkwater (Helen) has been replaced by Lynda Bellingham, and although "The Changing of the Helens" (as I think of it) takes some getting used to, Lynda Bellingham is very good. Also, Helen and James have two children now.

Of course, all of the actors look older than before (with the possible exception of Siegfried, who seems not to have aged in 8 years), but it doesn't matter at all. They are just as much fun to watch as ever. (And Tristan is still very, very cute.)

Although all the episodes are great, my personal favorite is called "The Bull With The Bowler Hat". It's wonderful, but I'm not going to spoil it for you - you'll have to buy the series and watch it! :-)

New Look, Same Place
Those who've followed the Herriot story from its humble beginnings are in for a surprise! Series 4 opens with a "new" Helen, two little Herriots, no Mrs. Hall and is set some time after WWII. With Series 3 closing on such a powerful emotional note, I had hoped we would follow the fortunes of the cast through the war years and their subsequent return. After such a long period with this group, it took some adjusting to the cast changes. It didn't help that the writers recycled some earlier themes from past programs, and my copy of episode 1 had an annoying scratchy soundtrack. It left me altogether just a little frustrated.

But my disappointment was brief. This series is every bit as powerful as its predecessors. James and family are in the thick of life, dealing with everything from buying a home to attending school concerts to deciding whether to leave the practice. Siegfried is his usual brilliant self, Tristan loafs..ahem, works for the Ministry of Agriculture as...

Hoarders: The Complete Season One

A fascinating look at a dabilitating disease that ruins lives, you cannot look away!
Hoarders: The Complete Season One
7 Episodes on 2 Discs (2010)

"Hoarders" on A&E is probably the most compelling show you haven't seen. It is an absolutely fascinating in-depth look at people whose entire lives have been utterly consumed by clutter and possessions, most of which are absolute junk. The inability to part with any of these items as small as a soda can to as large as a broken-down School Bus means many of them are facing threats of eviction, divorce, having their children removed from them, or even going to jail for criminal littering. There are over three million people suffering from obsessive compulsive hoarding in the United States and each episode tells two of their stories.

Hoarding is a psychological, painful disease where people are lost inside their own world with their stuff. Their stuff most of the time is more valuable to them than human relationships. In this show it can affect anyone as young as a seven year-old to as old as a...

If you need a little push. . .
to clean out your freezer, wash your windows, straighten up the shelves in the garage or empty out the extra closet - this is it. Watch one of these and you'll have a lot more energy to do whatever you need to!!!

Loved this series, so glad I bought it
I loved Hoarders when it aired on Foxtel in Australia. I found it addictive to watch, so just had to buy the DVD's.

Most episodes I really enjoyed, although there are a couple of really depressing stories.... The young guy whose father is an alcoholic, and also the lady with all the cat corpses in her garage.

Certainly an eye-opener, and makes me feel so much better about our piles of clutter. Also helps me think about why I really need to keep stuff. I only wish there had been more "behind the scenes" footage on the DVD's.

Thoroughly recommended, and I'm looking forward to Season 2 when it comes out.

In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great

Now *that's* a documentary!
While in grad school studying history (not ancient history, by the way) I got this and watched it with one of my fellow historians and his wife. We started off thinking: "Hm, this is quite a good documentary." We ended up thinking: "Dang! This is the best documentary ever!" Three things tip the scales on this one. First, the subject is inherently interesting. Whether you lean to the right or left, whether you are a tradtionalist or a revisionist at heart, you will find Alexander a fascinating character, and his bid to conquer the world harrowing, gripping, terrible, and awe-inspiring at same time. Second, the film is a good one, good pacing, wonderful footage, and all kinds of interesting people telling their stories. But what really makes this one special is Wood's incredible, insanely idiotic mania to reconstruct Alexander's journey. My God! Surveying battle sites from AWACS flying combat missions over Iraq? Fleeing Kabul ahead of the Taliban? Schmoozing with random warlords in...

ULTIMATE ARMCHAIR ADVENTURE
Around 300 BC, Alexander The Great had conquered the known world. He was only 32. It is said that he got a fever and died when he realized there were no worlds left to conquer.

At this writing, Oliver Stone's soon to open epic "Alexander" is getting a lot of attention, so it's inevitable that similar themed digital editions will ride the publicity wave.

The four hour armchair adventure IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ALEXANDER (Paramount) is among the very best of all TV documentaries.

Enthusiastic, knowledgable and affable Oxford scholar Michael Wood retraces -- for the first time -- the 16 country war path of Alexander from Macedonia to India. Citing excerpts from ancient Greek and Roman historians, Woods literally treks, rides, swims and sails in Alexander's footsteps. Passing through at least four war zones, Wood observes that these regions remain "on the fault lines of history." No kidding. Along the way, Wood encounters local story tellers who perform...

Presence Through Movement: Yin Yoga

Best Yin and Meditation practice, opened my mind to new thinking!!!
This video is broken into 3 sections: Introduction, Complete Yin Practice, and Daily Yin Practice. I will describe each one and give an overview of the program at the end.

The introduction is available as a separate menu selection so you can listen once in a while rather than with every practice. The first section includes segments from the practices and general Yin Yoga theory explained with voice over by Kim Eng. It is titled "A Portal into Presence."

The second part of the introduction section is with Eckhart Tolle titled "A Transformation of Consciousness". I have never heard him talk and thought he was a little goofy at first, but I really suggest listening carefully to this segment, Eckhart has a lot of insight into the Yin practice. He explains that when you hold the postures you may have physical and mental discomfort. How will you deal with the discomfort, hold with willpower and judgments? (This is not the best approach, you will be fighting yourself.)...

Peaceful
The first time I completed this DVD I found it very difficult. Some of the poses seemed to go on and on and on. I wanted to give it a second try before giving up on it, though. I learned that being able to hold a pose for 30-40 seconds isn't the same as holding it for 2-3 minutes. The second time I followed many of her modifications. There are two practices.

Complete Yin Yoga:
o Seated meditation - I have a difficult time sitting cross legged for an extended period, so the second time did it in Shivasana with a pillow under my knees. It was very relaxing.
o Long Legged Butterfly- similar to bound angle pose, except the legs are out long and the back is rounded. I was wondering how my lower back would feel about this and had no problems with it. The second time around, I placed blocks under my knees for support. This pose was very relaxing.
o Shoelace - similar to gomukasana. The second time around I did it has half shoelace with the bottom leg out...

Truly a wonderful video
This video was a great introduction to Yin yoga. Not only has my flexibility greatly improved, but also I have noticed increased feelings of calmness and balance, which is great for a mother of two little ones.

All Creatures Great & Small: The Complete Series 3 Collection (Repackage)

All Creatures Series 3 perhaps the most relaxed of all
This series "All Creatures Great and Small" is special beyond a doubt. The Third season of episodes finds our friends concerned about the coming war and is contemplative about life changing soon among the dales. It is the most delightful of the 3 with wonderful flute music and genuinely funny plots that have Tristan taking over kitchen duties with his usual haplessness and we are also given another "dose" of Dr. Granville Bennett,a repeating character who constantly gets our heroes drunk. Another features a dog that is subject to "gas" straying into an afternoon tea party and stinks the place up while a stock character colonel is explaining the benefits of "curry powder" in the diet. Siegfried is distant at times and eventually reveals his feelings about the coming war to James. In the end, the obligations of duty summon them both while Tristan holds up the home vet practice (Finally passing his tests.)Things were never the same again after this...

A wish come true
For all of the faithful ACG&S fans another wonderful series. The first two volumes were great and the VHS quality superb. I would suspect that the brisk sales in America has prompted the producers to bring out the third volume. The first three are the best because they capture these wonderful characters just before the start of WW2. I would also like to mention that Jim Wight has written a wonderful book about his father called "The Real James Herriot" (Ballantine Books) The relationships between the actors and the "real" Herriot family is wonderful. Thanks Amazon for telling me the good news. Hello VCR. I promise I won't watch them all in one evening. ( Liar!)

It Just Gets Better
If you are a fan of All Creatures Great and Small (ACGS), you will LOVE this newest release. It simply is terrific. Series III goes deeper, with both the characters and the storylines. Relationships are explored and, against the background of 1939 WWII Britain, the thriving practice of Farnon and Herriot offers up loads of teats. James and Helen anchor the show but certainly do not steal it. James is the consummate professional and we see him develop into a true journeyman vet, with both mistakes and miracles mixed together. His day at Grandville's garden is priceless, and James's locum at the practice of Seigfried's pal, Stewie, sets up a "colorful" day at the dog races. Siegfried falls in love, and exposes his heart in more ways than one. Tristan comes into his own as a vet and a man, yet is still capable of the idiotic behavior we've come to love. We even get to see a glimpse into the life of the stoic Mrs. Hall - her compassion as she reaches out to her family...

Mystery Team

HILARIOUS!
Funny, funny, funny! These former fart joke writing, comedic sketch making actors really show their stuff in this genius idea of these kid detectives continuing their service as they graduate from high school. Donald Glover, (known for Community) really shows his acting skills as he acts as an innocent kid, protecting the world from sex, drugs, and swear words. If you like Derrick Comedy, you'll love their feature length movie "The Mystery Team."

All-Star quotes:
"The stage is wet and smells like cold cuts!"
"Chocolate milk just taste better than regular milk."
"Dad, mom wants me to go to a party with girls; isn't that gross?"

Unconventional and Fun
An ambitious, never boring independent comedy with a ton of really funny scenes and a great cast. Buy this DVD or continue being a communist.

Absurdism at its best
My favorite comedies tend to be absurd comedies; movies where things happen that are so outside reality that you can just enjoy the trip on which the filmmakers are taking you. Great examples from the last 10+ years include Wet Hot American Summer, Black Dynamite, The Ten, and Hot Rod.

Add to that canon the hilarious and surprisingly effective Mystery Team.

Brought to you from DerrickComedy, the YouTube sketch troupe headed most famously by Donald Glover (of Community fame), Mystery Team is clearly a labor of love, a group of friends coming together to make a movie for the fun of making movies. And it really shows.

The story follows three former boy detectives who're approaching the end of high school, and are stuck in the stasis of their childhood fame. Just as they're approaching the end of their partnership, they're approached with a big case: A murder. Setting out to solve a grown-up crime using their kid-detective methods provides the film's...

How to be a Pinup Model, with Bettina May and Go-Go Amy: Complete instruction in the makeup, hair styling and accessories required for the retro '40s/'50s pinup girl look!

Okay for beginners
I wish I could say I loved this more because it has everything you would need to start being a vintage pinup.
I bought this hoping that I could have a fun thing to share with my girlfriends during a sleepover or even save for a bachelorette party, etc.
I've had my nose buried in books, video tutorials, and movies about vintage pinups for a long long time, and when I finally saw this dvd, I was a little disappointed.
While it is kitschy and cute, it also looks a little sloppy. Personally, I think it needs to be edited better because I found myself bored and fastforwarding through a lot of it.

The makeup section had some nice tips for long-lasting wear (like powdering your lipstick after blotting, and then reapplying) but you could see where the makeup was just badly done. The lipstick got smudged here and there, and the eyeliner was a little messy. To be honest, I've seen better makeup videos on youtube.

As far as the hair goes, it was okay. I...

Retro-Cute from Start to Finish
Keeping in mind this is pure-retro, I loved how meandering the pace was. It's not mtv-flash editing. It's, honestly, very fifties. Makeup, hair, and cheesecake-posing; exactly what the video promises. I loved the hairstyle secion the most. They do an entire hair set, and then when she is combing the set out, it's real-time and I got the sense of the fifties, no cellphones, no rush, pretty night-table, sweet smiles. I felt like I was at a sleep-over and we were doing our hair in Grease. I adored the big hair-rolls they demo'd. These two women fully embrace the fifties lifestyle. And they portray a sexy-lady without apology. The make-up section was a bit long in the tooth, but great for beginners. The posing section was really nice and encouraging too. It's very girls-night-out-with-class and the production value, tho simple, was just right; great, authentic 50s set-dressing, good audio, and most of all inspirational. If you like the fifties and want to try your hand (gams?) at...

Totally girly and delightful
You don't have to have aspirations to be a pin up model to reap the benefits from this very cute and girly program. Bettina May and Go Go Amy are two beautiful vintage models that share pointers to help achieve a completely stunning and retro look.

The program "how-to" sections inform the viewwer on:

Hair- a complete hair set with combout, types of curlers, setting lotions, pinning the hair back and creating rolls, creating bangs without cutting bangs

Makeup- applying foundation, blush, lining the eyebrow, using cake eyeliner for the mysterious " cat eyes" and the finishing touch, false eyelashes!

Pointers for photo shoots- Standing and sitting poses to accentuate curves, using vowels to change facial expression.

This program was so delightful,I felt amongst friends and a bit nostalgic about those Friday night sleepovers with crazy girl friends.

All Creatures Great & Small: The Complete Series 2 Collection

10 stars are least...........
All Creatures Great And Small is by far my favorite BBC series and the #2 with the Christmas segment makes me cry everytime I see it. Set just as WW2 is beginning James is faced with joining the service, and the snow as they head off to midnight mass has begun to fall. The tinkers (gypsies) are camped out in a farmers shed and the young girls pet needs tending but the father doesn't accept charity.......... And then there is the testing the Christmas cake for the senior vet, Siegfried Farnon. The whole cast is 10 star. The main characters are James Herriot (Christopher Timothy), Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy), Tristan Farnon (Peter Davison) and Helen Herriot (Carol Drinkwater, later Lynda Bellingham). The series covers the years between 1936 and just after 1950. This is a DVD that everyone in the family no matter the age will enjoy...........

All Creatures Great And Small Series II
This 6 volume set is a continuation of the exploits of veterinarian James Herriot who began practice in the Yorkshire dales of Great Britain in 1939. It follows the books written by Herriot and carries a first rate cast including Christopher Timothy as the english vet and Robert Hardy as his partner, mentor, and occasional tormentor.

The subject matter, acting, and settings are first rate. For those who have read Harriots books, these videos (produced by the BBC) will NOT be a disappointment. It is, of course, helpful to have viewed series 1 since the program was filmed in the chronological sequence of Harriot's life, from his graduation through his marriage and later life.

I heartily recommend this series to anyone who loves animals or has an appreciation for english humor. The films are laced generously with both.

Real Life Comedy Part 2
The Production: The TV series "All Creatures Great & Small" started in Great Britain on January 1978 with no nonsense photography with the typical grain of that time period. This DVD box set is from the second season, which played in September through December 1978. Some photography scenes were taken direct off Yorkshire farms. There are very little special effects, the only ones I can think of is either drugged or fake animals to act out certain quick scenes. Were some of the animals trained to act like they were sick or dying? For example: This set shows a horse dying of lockjaw with the finishing effect of lying on the ground shaking. Sometimes certain operations were preformed with a human hand, checking the rear of certain animals for pregnancies or intestinal problems. At times when the actors themselves are seen performing inspections on the animals, their hands were either hidden behind the animals or the actors makes facial expressions with the lower parts of their bodies off...

War to End All Wars: World War One

Great history here!
I've studied WWII extensively but never really studied the first world war so this video really opened up my eyes. Very personal account of the war and it's impact. I would suggest it to history buffs.

Highly informative doc
After taking a class at my university on World War 1 I got really interested in this point in history. It was really cool to watch a really compelling video about the war that didn't feel like I was reading a textbook. I'd recommend this to fellow history buffs.

Personal
This documentary made WW1 seem very real and personal by sharing the stories of several individuals. A lot of documentaries about the subject are purely about cold facts on a timeline. I could really feel the pain these people went through, especially since I have relatives who faught. It made them seem more human, instead of just names and dates.

Beyond the Barbed Wire: An Artists View of the Holocaust

Very well done
I had heard really good things about this video so I decided to check it out. I was not disappointed. The subject matter is obviously very heavy and is treated with a great deal of respect. For those who want to go beyond the history books, this is a very personal account and truly shows the human side of this dark time. Highly recommended.

Inspiring
This story is such a powerful testament to the human spirit. Ben Altman survived hell, and as dark as that era was, his story needs to be told and this DVD does a wonderful job of doing that. It is amazing and so inspiring that people can suffer such horrific tragedy and yet their spirit not be broken.

One-Of-A-Kind Tale
There can be no doubt that the Holocaust remains one of the most horrifying events of human history. Its costs are well-documented and forever tragic. But even this is not always enough. Understanding the immensity of this period requires more than simple texts. It instead requires truth.

And "Beyond the Barbed Wire: An Artist's View of the Holocaust" offers that.

Incredibly moving, "Beyond the Barbed Wire" is a must-see for any viewer. Charting the story of Ben Altman--painter, tailor, survivor--the film explains the beginnings of war and its all-too tangible results. Altman's story will put a face to the facts and, in that, viewers will understand the relevance.

All should note, however, that this is not a tepid story. Details are given, unflinchingly. And, for some, this may prove to be too much. But all will still find this film to be worthwhile and powerful.

Korea The Forgotten War - 4 DVD Set!

seems like an excellent deal for learning about the korean war
I dont know why this dvd set hasnt gotten 100 4-5 star reviews yet for its content. (as it is very cheaply priced..i wasnt expecting anything great) It seems to very thoroughly cover the Korean War and has much film from the Korean war inside it.

I've Watched this Series at Least a Dozen Times
It makes the conflict come alive in real time. It has changed, sharpened, intensified, my understanding of the word Korea. This is a series parents can watch with their kids knowing they will see the unvarnished truth about the Korean War and war in general.
What struck me most is the resilience, courage, ingenuity and spirit of the American fighting man and woman. being a veteran, when I volunteer at the V.A. hospital, I can better connect with the vets who were there.

Refresher Course.
The Korean War, which some at the time insisted on calling a "police action" despite the 50,000 or so American deaths, was never really "forgotten." It just naturally went down the memory hole, largely for two reasons: (1) The peace talks in Panmunjom dragged on for two years and the public lost interest; and (2) the North Koreans, Chinese, and Russians lost in their attempt to expand their ideology but we didn't win either. The war ended in a cease fire, not a truce, just about where it began. We still have troops stationed at the 38th parallel and so do the North Koreans, and every once in a while there is a minor incident of violence.

This set of four disks takes us from "Prologue -- The Road to War" to interviews with two Medal of Honor recipients. Most of the first three disks deal with the military situation, the remainder with interviews. There are multiple talking heads, ranging from historians to PFCs. All the heads are American.

I found it an...

Stagecoach (The Criterion Collection)

Yes, it is an improvement over the WB edition...but you should own both!
I've just viewed the latest Criterion edition of Stagecoach and compared it side by side with the WB 2 disc set. The picture is improved.... not perfect ...but much better. I prefer the commentary by Scott Eyman on the WB edition. The second disc on the WB set has the spectacular American Masters Documentary and a wonderful featurette. The new Blu-Ray and DVD sets by Criterion also have a wealth of bonus features topped by an hour interview with Ford himself! If you are a fan I'd keep the older edition for the bonus features and Eymans commentary and feel good about adding the new edition for better picture and non-repeated bonus features. The featurette on the stunt man Yakima Canutt is excellent, Bogdonovich is always interesting...Ford home movies fun.....it's a solid Criterion package!

Criterion Gives this Classic Western the Deluxe Treatment!
This special edition is jam-packed with goodies for fans of the film and of the western genre, starting off with an audio commentary on the first disc by film historian and western scholar Jim Kitses. He challenges the conventional view that Stagecoach lacks the depth and command of craft of John Ford's later films. Kitses does a fantastic job of explaining how Ford's camerawork and the use of invisible editing set up differences in class and established genre conventions. When not offering expert analysis, he provides biographical information on various cast members in this eloquent and informative track.

Also included on this disc is a trailer.

Disc two starts off with "Bucking Broadway," a 54-minute silent film from 1917 that stars John Ford favorite Harry Carey as a cowboy whose true love is taken away by a big city type. It features many of the themes and conventions that Ford would explore again and again in later films.

There is a 1968 interview...

Recipe for a classic
Let's see - take a whiskey drummer, add a boozy doctor (served in the Union Army,) a snaky gambler (Confederate vet played by John Carradine,) a good girl (haughty young wife of a horse soldier posted out west with the 6th Cavalry,) and an obnoxious and imperious businessman with a secret to hide. Add one bad girl (Claire Trevor) driven our of town with the drunken doc by the town's respectable marm hens, and one cuffed outlaw, the Ringo Kid (John Wayne.) Shake vigorously in a stagecoach plunging violently through hostile Apache territory.

Made in 1939, the Year of the Motion Picture, John Ford's STAGECOACH is pretty much everything you want or need in a western. Nominated for a slew of Academy Awards, it took one home when Thomas Mitchell won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as the shrewd, whiskey-loving physician. In 1995 it was placed on the National Film Registry by the National Film Preservation Board.

Well, this is the first film Ford shot in...

Waiting for God: Season Five

Back to Bayview: The FINAL SEASON is Here!
Let the antics of aging continue! The Bayview Retirement Home for the Almost Dead is once more the setting for the on-going activities of Tom Ballard and Diana Trent.

As I have stated in the other reviews of this series, "WAITING FOR GOD" was done on an overall story arc. We've had the beginning, the middle, and now here comes the end! But what a build-up to the most hilarious climax a series ever had! Those who thought they had seen 'everything' with the way the Newhart series ended have not seen ANYTHING yet. The first time I saw the last episode (after almost killing my ribcage laughing) I was a bit saddened to realize that there were no more. However they ended on what can only be called a 'high point.' The series finale is priceless!

Thankfully, the missing Christmas special included at the end of Season Four solved the continuity problem of how we lost Basil Makepeace (played by the late Michael Bilton) and acquired Jane's grandfather Jamie. Mr...

Excellent British Comedy Series About Nursing Home Inhabitants
The title of this show means that the characters are old and very close to the end of their lives. However, they are having one last laugh as the get there. Everyone in this show is hilarious and you do not need to be older to enjoy it. The two main characters definitely hold it together with the woman being the acidic of the two and the man being the soothing balm. These are two terrific comedy partners and the supporting characters are all well picked, in all generations. Nothing like this exists in American tv so it is especially a treat for American viewers like myself. Watch every season of it. You can't go wrong.

The Best British Comedy ever to be on television!
You will never tire of watching this awesome series. I cannot get enough of this. I have watched it over and over many times these past 10 or so years. I was lucky enough to obtain all five seasons from the UK. Each time you watch; it is if for the first time. Hearing Diana Trent's sardonic quotes are delightful. I cannot say enough about this show. I just wish it didn't end. I only hope one day they would come back and do a reunion. That would be a television treat of a lifetime!

Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman

Yes, but...
After waiting for nearly a year for the chance to see this, I had so hoped that this documentary would be worthy of Shulman and his extraordinary work. As mentioned in the video Modernist Shulman did not like Post Modernism architecture. Oddly what we have here, to present Julius Shulman born 1910 died 2009, is a dizzying Post Modernist chop chop documentary. I am absolutely enthralled by Shulman's photo work. And apart from the style of film making, what is most maddening is that Shulman's photographs, the very reason why the video should have been made, are usually on the screen for a period of less than four seconds each - four seconds! And during those sparse moments, Shulman's photos are moved around, swept across, have distracting CGI animated roads threading below - just too much razzle dazzle. Painfully, there is even a segment where a cartoon character is animated to walk in front of a few of Shulman's photos - the impact is unbelievably amateurish at best. Shulman's work was...

Better then expected
I loved this documentary simply because I feel like I met Julius and got to spend some time with him, if only via the screen. His simple approach to photography of single point and revealing his secret of combining natural light with artificial lighting to complement each other in order to reveal more layers was wonderful. Also, I liked the concept of how he was always relaxed and took the time to experience the moment and let the architectural, and the emotional impact of the moment, lead him in his shot taking; not letting components of that moment like dogs barking, be something that distracted him, but instead, gave him the opportunity to interact and respond as being one with the moment. Clearly his talent was to know how alive he was at every moment, and his photos reflect this energy. The architecture he was shooting, simply allowed him to share himself like any artist does, through their chosen medium and present to us what he was able to see at that moment. The beauty he...

City of the Living Dead (Special Edition)

LUCIO = MAESTRO
the negative reviews are missing the point as usual because this is one of Fulci's Golden Greats. of course there's some plot holes and cheesy moments but they are few and far between, and the majority of movie is all guts and gory. all good Fulci movies establish hellish creeping dread that is punctuated by beautiful women, a few laugh out loud moments (some intentional, some not) and many gorious glorious death setpieces natch

although it's not a patch on The Beyond, I love this movie from start to finish, conceding that yes the last 15 minutes of this film is somewhat sketchily presented. howver the end scenes are in keeping with the logic of the narrative to that point, and really, if you've paid attention to a relatively (for Fulci) unconvoluted plot then the last 15 seconds shouldn't leave you "scratching your head". City of the Living Dead is masterful with several classic scenes, and there's few horror directors that have such a deft and entertaining touch when it...

Extreme, Effective Fulci Gorefest
CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD is a beautiful Fulci film, expertly directed and gorgeously photographed. The performances are top notch considering the genre and foreign origins of the film.

Also known as GATES OF HELL, CotLD opens revolves around the suicide of a priest which opens the gates of Hell. A woman with a link to the beyond and a reporter (Christopher George from PIECES!) are drawn into the bizarre happenings surrounding this turn of events and the blood begins to flow. And does it ever flow: from the eyes of those who are unfortunate enough to stare down the undead, from the mouths of those vomiting their entrails, from the brains of those who don't mind their head when the zombies are around, and from the cheeks of poor old Bob who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, specifically between a huge drill and a very angry man.

Needless to say, these images amount to some of the most unforgettable Fulci imagery, topping even the...

Buckets of blood, heaps of guts, that crazy Lucio!
Fulci's follow-up to his enjoyable bloodbath Zombie(1979) is euro-trash sleaze on the outside but multiple viewings have revealed a surreal, scary horror film with a few good ideas, and dripping with gothic atmosphere. A priest hangs himself in Dunwitch, Mass and starts off a deadly chain of events leading up to the end of the world. Only gruff reporter Christopher George, and Medium-returned-from-the-dead Catherine McColl can stop the carnage. Some generaly haunting scenes such as when the priest's ghost appears just before someone gets kacked, and a little boy pursued by the spirit of his dead sister through the deserted streets. Once again, if you can't handle the gore, better stay clear. This features brain squashing, eyeball popping, intestine-barfing, head drilling, and a giant crucifix thrust into a guy's knads. Ouch.

All Creatures Great & Small: The Complete Series 5 Collection

BBC Could Have Done Better
My husband and I were disappointed with the fifth season of the " All Creatures Great and Small Series". The first three seasons and specials were well written, directed and acted. However in the latter portion of the fourth season and the entire fifth season is appears the BBC cut corners on this production. The writing, acting and directing are mediocre at best. Christopher Timothy, Robert Hardy and Peter Davison give outstanding performances as James, Sigfried and Tristian. However we did not care for Linda Bellingham as Helen Herriot. Her performance is cold, she is like a robot going through the motions of saying her lines. Carol Drinkwater gave life, humor and class to Helen. Her performance actually made you believe she is Helen and always will be. Overall this dvd is must for your " All Creatures Great and Small " dvd collection if you are a die hard James Herriot fan.

Still entertaining
This fifth series marked the half way point in All Creatures adventures, after being resurected after WW2. This classic BBC production is no longer based on the books of James Herriot, new writers based stories on the wonderful character performances of Robert Hardy (Senior partner Seigfried) Peter Davison (Brother Tristan) Christopher Timothy. (James Herriot) In addition to which, there is now colourful Scottish vet Callum Buccannon, intoduced during series 4, to assist the partners in practice, and his love affair with Diedre, former girlfriend of Tristan, is chartered in the episodes.

One continuing handicap of the later series was Carol Drinkwater no longer played Helen Herriot, the role was thereafter the war assumed by Lynda Bellingham, who tended to play every part she got exactly the same. Thus she was never really Helen, simply Lynda Bellingham joining the family. Continuity errors dogged the programme, with things like the all too fast aging of the Herriots...

Series 5 of All Creatures
I enjoyed the final series for this program. The only complaint I had was that the writing was tired. They redid some situations that were done in previous episodes - just changed the Actors. I also missed some of the Actors that had moved on including the original Helen - James's wife, and Mrs. Hall the house keeper.

The Virginian - Complete First Season on 10 DVDs - Limited Edition Embossed Collector's Tin! Plus Bonus Interview DVD!

Savor the memories...
I couldn't wait for the May release of this fine series either so I picked it up at Sam's Club. This has to be the most beautifully photographed of all the classic TV Westerns. Another reviewer mentioned each episode was like a mini-movie, and this is true.

The storylines are credible and entertaining, and the cast is stellar. LJ Cobb is in a category by himself, of course, but having watched the first two seaons on Encore Westerns (and then again on the DVDs) I'd forgotten what a genuinely good actor James Drury was. Ditto for Clu Gulagher and Doug McClure. And while I am enjoying the later episodes, I must confess I miss Gary Clarke's "Steve" and the chemistry the three main leads--Drury, McClure and Clarke--displayed during the first two seasons.

One of the things I find enjoyable is how "real" the series plays. The guy that played Randy carps about this in the book written about the series (especially how the horses were handled?) but I beg to differ...

A Classic TV Western
Until "The Virginian" bowed on NBC in the fall of 1962, Westerns were relegated to either half-hour or one-hour time slots. The network took a chance, counting on the popularity of Westerns at the time, to expand a weekly Western series to 90 minutes. The gamble paid off. The show ran through 1971, chalking up a total of 249 episodes. "The Virginian" is the third longest-running TV Western, behind only "Gunsmoke" and "Bonanza."

"The Virginian - The Complete First Season" contains all 30 full-color episodes from the first season. The 1902 Owen Wister novel on which the series was based was set in the town of Medicine Bow, Wyoming in the 1890's, and chronicled the lives and relationships of the people who came west to settle the wild land. The title refers to a man of mystery whose past was unknown.

The novel was first adapted to the screen as a silent picture directed by Cecil B. DeMille. There was another silent film in 1923 and then the 1929 sound version...

finally it is out
I am very glad to see the Virginian is finally out on DVD. The first season is 10 dvd out in May. I remember the series with great fondness. The fist season has many good episodes with Judge Garth and how he came to adopt Betsy. It also has Trampas at his most charming. I am anxious to see if the old series holds up. It took a long time to put it on DVD as it was in a 90 minute format. All Were in color also. This is a series worth watching again. Pay careful attention to the guest stars. Many are famous now and were not then.

Peanuts: 1970's Collection, Vol. 2 (Be My Valentine Charlie Brown / You're a Good Sport / It's Arbor Day / What a Nightmare / It's Your First Kiss / You're the Greatest)

Another Review From The Peanuts Gallery (2)
Peanuts specials are timeless classics with wonderful moral lessons and clean/clever humor that you can't find presented the same way nowadays. The peanuts will always have a more adult sense of awareness but still never lose their innocence. This 1970's Volume 2 Collection will contain the following six remaining specials from the later half of the 1970's on 2 discs:

Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown (Aired: 1/28/1975)
One of the last peanut specials to become a true perennial classic. With Valentine's Day approaching, the gang prepares in various ways. Charlie Brown waits at the mailbox, Linus buys a box of candy for his teacher (while Sally thinks it's for herself), Snoopy puts on a dramatic "Pawpet" show, and the school has a Valentine's Day party.

You're A Good Sport Charlie Brown (Aired: 10/28/1975)
Peppermint Patty gets good ol' Chuck to participate in a motocross race which has many challenges, including a mysterious Masked Marvel.

It's...

Last of the "classics", and farewell to Vince Guaraldi. It goes downhill on disc #2.
First the me say to those who already have the 5 previously released specials on DVD, you may want to think twice about buying this just to get "WHAT A NIGHTMARE, CHARLIE BROWN".
"Nightmare" is the first real CLUNKER in the Peanuts specials. It is not really a Peanuts special as it only features Snoopy, with a guest appearance by Charlie Brown. None of the other kids are there. You basically have to sit through 20 minutes of Snoopy growling at sled-dogs who are trying to take things away from him. There is almost no dialog for the middle 20 minutes as the sled-dog owner is an adult who only talks with the sound of a muted trumpet. "Nightmare" would have worked as a brief throw-away segment of another special, much like the Snoopy v.s. Red Baron segment in "Its The Great Pumpkin". There is just not enough to carry an entire 25 minute special.

That said, I will point out the highlights.
"BE MY VALENTINE,CHARLIE BROWN (1975)" is a true "classic", you will never...

This brings back childhood memories for oldtimers and creates new memories for children. Peanuts cartoons are wholesome viewing and there is always an underlying lesson hidden in the show. Enjoy with your whole family.

The Gauntlet

The Cop and The Pro....
This review refers to the Warner Bros. DVD edition of "The Gauntlet"....

From the moment Ben Shockley(Clint Eastwood)steps out of his car and an empty booze bottle falls out, we know this is not the usual "Dirty Harry" character we'd been used to up to now. Ben is a cop who's chances for greatness seem to be fading with him.
Eastwood directs as well as stars in this film and we see his brillant directoral style taking hold here.

The Phoenix P.D. seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel when they assign Shockley the job of escorting Gus Malley, a seemingly unimportant witness from Las Vegas back to Phoenix for a trial. Ben's been looking for his big break on a big case and it doesn't look like this will be it with this guy. Upon arriving in Las Vegas, Ben discovers that Gus is no guy. Gus Malley(Sondra Locke), is a local prostitute and unwilling partcipant in the journey back as well. This is not "a hooker with a heart story" though, this pro is as hard...

Sondra Locke's finest hour
I read years ago that "The Gauntlet" was originally intended to feature the star matchup of Clint Eastwood and Barbra Streisand, but after Eastwood was warned by the Warner Bros. brass of La Streisand's diva tantrums on the set of "A Star is Born" he nixed the idea and cast his "Josey Wales" costar Sondra Locke instead. Admittedly, a Eastwood-Streisand matchup would have made this film a major blockbuster instead of the solid hit it was, but I'm glad it never happened. The pair would probably have had no chemistry whatsoever and Streisand would have been unbearably shrill in the role of "two bit hooker" Gus Malley. Besides, Locke is excellent in the role and proves a terrific sparring partner for Eastwood. Yes, her subsequent pairings with the legend were less than satisfactory, but for one bright shining moment, Locke's talent would shine brightly.

"The Gauntlet" actually works strictly because of the Eastwood/Locke chemistry and not because of the unbelievable plot...

The Guantlet on Blu Ray!!! Clint Eastwood takes the bus!!!
One of Eastwood's best films, and one of Sondra Locke'e for that matter, this Blu transfer blows away the previous DVD release which really wasnt all that bad,but this Blu Ray transfer and sound are just incredible,it blows the old DVD right out of the water!!!,your HD TV,and sound system will get quite a workout here!!! No extras here, just the movie, not even a trailer, but for the pretty low price, this one's worth picking up if you're a fan, worth the upgrade!!! The final scenes with the bus(Clint also had some bus action also in Dirty Harry, remember these films were made well before "Speed"!) are truly incredible, this movie is action packed!!! "The Gauntlet" is a winner!!! I've had this on VHS,DVD and now Blu Ray!!! A+

Hope Springs

NEVER SEEN ON AMERICAN TV BUT A HIGHLAND HIGH
Prison food seems to have accentuated 4 women ex-cons' cleavage. Plus their wits & determination. They con the con and run. Unfortunately, instead of Barbados they end up in the Scottish Highlands. Hope Springs and the inn with that name. Seems a good place to lay low, while they get new passports. But trouble starts. There's more trouble in Hope Springs than Midsomer County has murders (Midsomer Murder DVD-TV series). Even multiple murder, like in Midsomer, but in the highlands it all happens differently. Events leave you laughing as much as in suspense. What a fantastic combination for a TV series. But after 8 episodes the story comes full circle, and alas, the series is not continued. For some unreasonable, unexplainable notion, it has never been shown on USA TV, but then it is a recent, 2009, BBC airing. HOPE SPRINGS is new, delightfully different, and this DVD set is the only way you can enjoy it.

My wife gave it 5 1/2 stars while only half way through the series. Men...

British comedy drama at it's best.
Witty, clever and highly entertaining.

The end of each episode get's you thinking, 'how the heck are they going to get out of that one'!

Full of twists and turns with plenty of drama and comedy to boot.

With a plethera of fine actors, I defy anyone not to enjoy this series. Just a shame that it's not getting a follow up.

This is one of the best shows I have ever seen on the Beeb.

Highly recommended.

P.S. You do get used to the inclemant weather here in the UK. :-)

I purchased this video on a whim because I like the actress Alex Kingston Doctor Who and I love the British sense of humor and drama. This too short series is simply excellent. Good story, even though it lasted only one season. Funny! Well acted! Well written! And the "dark humor: is excellent! And the actress's aren't bad to look at either

A Perfect World

Eastwood journeys deeper into the heart of the American male
Continuing his exploration of what makes a man good, bad -- just plain human-- is what this film delves into, even more deeply than in the stunning "Unforgiven" (to his credit, Eastwood never pretends, as some male writers and directors do, that he understands women; instead, he admits that we are mysteries to him, and concentrates his energies on what he does understand: American men). Refusing to subscribe to typical American cinematic over-simplifications of "good vs. evil," Clint Eastwood delivers films that make you realize very quickly that there is no room for such absolutes when dealing with human truths. This thesis, which he has been pursuing for some time now, perhaps starting with "Tightrope" where the line between good and evil blurs to invisibility, he has, with "A Perfect World," given us a translation of John Lee Hancock's brilliant screenplay that is both beautiful and almost too painful to bear. Noted by critics at the time of...

Touching and Tragic
This film has two of Hollywood's biggest stars - Eastwood and Costner - both of whom give great performances. But it's the young actor who plays the kidnapped boy who steals the show. This drama is set in Texas, early November 1963 - shortly before JFK's fateful visit to Dallas. An escaped convict (Costner) kidnaps a boy and is on the run from the law (Eastwood) and each of their lives are changed forever. The film is especially touching whenever it focuses on the growing relationship between the convict & boy - Costner's portrayal of the tough escapee with a kind heart is great and the boy is so natural and likeable. Under Eastwood's direction the film is controlled and avoids the pitfall of melodrama. The ending is tragic yet inevitable. I think this is one of Costner's best performances and was surprised when the film seemed to be overlooked by the media. I loved the whole feel of the movie and cared about the characters - even some of the minor ones like the...

An astounding, film. Costner and Eastwood in top form.
The story was very unique and I actually really cared about the characters and how their stories unfolded. Even the kid was really cool, and I don't often like kids in movies. Kevin Cosnter gives an exceptional performance, ranking among his best. I love the scene at the end of the film where he is dancing with the wife of the family he has just assualted. Genius. And Clint Eastwood manages to pull off another stellar performance even as a supporting character. He directs the film as well, and manages to tell and original, intelligent emtional stroy. Bravo!

The Man From Laramie / The Desperadoes

A good value...
'Man from Laramie' is a time-tested Mann-Stewart classic (4-plus stars), 'Desperadoes' a psychologically-less-nuanced but enjoyable western/drama from Charles Vidor (3 1/2 stars). What's nice about this set, aside from its inviting price and space-saving component, is the fact that 'Laramie' finally is offered on a single-sided picture disc containing only the widescreen version (Columbia's 1999 issue is a fullscreen/widescreen flipper). Otherwise the transfer quality-- decent, though not great-- of both films and extra features are identical to those which appear on their original releases.

LEGENDS: BEST OF THE WEST
The Desperadoes (1943) and The Man From Laramie (1955) though a dozen years apart in the filming, are well suited to be placed in the same DVD box.

Is there anyone out there above the age of 30 who hasn't seen these two movies? Well, they are certainly not age restrained, so anyone enjoying a good western from the olden days can and will get enjoyment watching them both.

I was born in 1943 (Desperadoes), so missed this one when originally released but saw it later on TV, while the Man From Laramie was on the screen when I was a teenager. A lot of things have changed since, one of them being that Hollywood for the most part has forgotten how to film a good western, and when an offer of two 'legends' of the screen come up any buckaroo worth their salt will just have to fork over.

Don't miss these two from yesterday pards, they are well worth it, if you are a fan of the old west on the screen.

Semper Fi.

The Man from Laramie is good because of James Stewart but the Desperadoes is not up to par, its story and acting is weak.

Disney Parks: The Secrets, Stories and Magic Behind the Scenes [Blu-ray plus DVD and Digital Copy]

An enthralling interactive brochure/special for first time visitors and veterans
Watched Blu-Ray version on a 37 inch 1080p Sharp Aquos using a Slim PlayStation 3.
Purchased at $18.99.

-1 Blu-Ray disc containing Disneyland Resorts: Behind the Scenes (51 min), Undiscovered Disney Parks (44 min), and Ultimate Walt Disney World (44 min) of both locations, and Extras
-1 DVD with the same content as the Blu-Ray, and a Digital Copy. The Digital Copy included includes 3 .mp4 files (Disneyland Resorts: Behind the Scenes, Undiscovered Disney Parks, and Ultimate Walt Disney World) that you simply copy off the DVD yourself. There is no code to redeem through iTunes or Windows Media Player, but I did import them into the iTunes library.
-Blu-Ray case is inside a cardboard slipcase. This version may not be as extensive as the 6-Disc DVD set which I have never seen

Picture and sound quality was just fine for something like this.

I'm reviewing this mostly from a content point of view.

I have personally been to Disney...

Everything you might want to know about the Disney Parks..
Picked this set up today at one of the local stores. Thought I'd share some comments.

The set consists of six DVDs, each in an individual thin case - which are stored in a cardboard sleeve. Most of the videos are "widescreen", but a few are "full screen" 1.33:1 ratio and they all lack close-captioning. These videos document what there is to do at the parks and attractions, with a lot of interviews of park employees and with actual customers. It does start to seem like a hour long commercial for Disney, but I guess that is expected given that it's a detailed look at a theme park and it's attractions.

Listing of the discs;

1) Walt Disney World Resort: Behind the Scenes. 52 minutes with two extra features; What's New in the Haunted Mansion & Stitch's Great Escape. Not sure just how long each of the extra features are - but they seem to be around 8~12 minutes. This DVD reminded me of the History Channel's documentary...

bluray vs dvd version
I plan on picking these up in the near future...Please keep in mind that the 6 pack dvd version contains more then the blu ray. Why? Don't know...you would think all of it would be on blu ray. Just keep in mind that if you buy the blu ray that you get the same movies on dvd + 3 more and all the extras. Since blu ray players will up convert, it might be a better deal to go with the dvd version.

The Eastwood Factor (Extended Edition)

Morgan Freeman narrates the new Clint Eastwood documentary!
As soon as I heard the voice come from the screen I was mesmerized. That deep voice, thoughtful in its pauses, as if every word is well considered before delivery. One of the sexiest, and most easily recognized voices in the world. Not Clint Eastwood, although his low-pitched growl is still as recognizable as ever. Morgan Freeman. A voice that most of us would recognize immediately if he were speaking three aisles away in a crowded grocery store.

If the original Eastwood Factor was an intimate look at Clint Eastwood through the eyes of his friend and fellow filmmaker Richard Schickel, then the extended version, for all that remains the same, is a new and entirely different film. Morgan Freeman's deeply intellectual and slightly philosophical narration is driving the Eastwood Factor train this time. Freeman, a Hollywood icon in his own right, has worked closely with Eastwood on some of his most important films. Every project these two men have undertaken together has turned...

A tribute to a legend
Clint Eastwood is one of the few actors who can direct, produce and compose the music for his films. Many actors who try to do this fall flat on their face. However, Eastwood has proven himself time and time again through extraordinary films like "Unforgiven", Million Dollar Baby", "Letters from Iwo Jima" and "Gran Torino."

"The Eastwood Factor" is a documentary about Clint Eastwood's film career. While this documentary does not speak to Eastwood's personal life, it does a great job of describing Eastwood's notable films. The documentary also includes Eastwood himself speaking on what inspired him to make each film. Most appropriately Morgan Freeman who has co-stared in numerous Eastwood films narrates the documentary.

If you interested in documentaries or Clint Eastwood himself, you will find this documentary to be quiet interesting and entertaining.

Sitting Down With A Legend
In recent years, after directing films like Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino, and Invictus, Clint Eastwood has established himself as not only a classic actor, but also director/producer. This little documentary sits down with Clint to talk to him about some of his films.

Though not getting into any of Clint's personal life, this documentary spans his Dirty Harry, loner western, comedy/romance, and high-drama career turns over the past 30 years. Not all his films are covered, but the most iconic ones are. Clips of the films themselves interspersed with Eastwood's comments and recollections make for a highly engrossing format that will hook you in the first five minutes.

Basically, if you are a fan of any of Eastwood's varied body of on-screen work, this is a DVD that needs to be in your collection pronto!

Drury Outdoors Whitetail Obsession 10

Awesome Video
I've watched many deer hunting videos on TV and through purchasing them to add to my library. This movie rates up there among the best and I will explain why. Of course it has many good hunting sequences, but what separated this video from the rest was the hunters. To me taking a nice Whitetail is one of life's greatest challenges and thrills. But lets not forget, that we as hunters just took the life of one of God's greatest creatures. Nearly every person in this video showed happiness at their good fortune but none that I can remember jumped up and down pumping their fists, jumping up and down screaming BBD Baby, BBD. No hunter picked any one up shaking them up and down and dancing around. All those kind of actions and scenes totally turn me off. It is a happy occasion, but lets not forget that a grand animal died to bring us that happiness. So as hunters lets give the game the respect it deserves. It is good to smile with happiness but laughing and carrying on screaming I smoked...

The Rookie

Hey! This is a good film!
I don't understand why there are so many slams against this movie posted here...this is a very exciting, action-packed film! Maybe these critics aren't Charlie Sheen fans or sumpin'...but this film kept me riveted all the way thru it!

Clint's character, cop Nick Pulovski, has hints and traces of Dirty Harry Callahan, so fans of that series should enjoy this film; Charlie Sheen is the rookie detective who Clint gets stuck with as his new partner - Clint's old partner, played by Hal Williams ("Smitty" the cop on the old SANFORD & SON tv show) gets offed by Raul Julia (who plays an exceptionally evil criminal) and Raul's girlfriend/female alter ego, played by Sonia Braga (who looks INCREDIBLE!!!). These two and their goons run an auto theft ring (and perform a few murders along the way), all the while being stalked and staked out by Clint and Charlie. The film begins with an outstanding chase sequence on the freeway, with lots of crashes, blood and bullets.

Sheen...

Another Eastwood Goody!!! And Sheen Was Good Too!!!
When two policemen move in on car thieves, one of them gets killed. And the fallen officer isn't just a partner, he's a friend. Now it's PERSONAL!!! Clint Eastwood plays Nick Pulovski the surviving partner, who makes it a point to try and find the hoodlums. Of course Clint plays a rough and tumble policeman like in his Dirty Harry roles, but in this movie, he does show a more down to earth side, lighter side. There's a terrific car chase involving Clint and when it's over, it's rather comical.
Nick gets a new partner David Ackerman (played by Charlie Sheen) who looks more like an insurance salesman than a policeman, mainly because he's from the side of town where you learn early in life where to put your fork and knife on the table.
With this new partner, the two head out to try and find the thieves. The head goon is played by none other than Raul Julia. I must admit, when I first spotted Raul playing that of a villain, I didn't think he'd fit the role, but after seeing the...

Great fun for Eastwood fans.
This is surely of one the minor Clint Eastwood efforts, but still very pleasing to watch, and containing the same film structure and style of his better movies. Taking aside the violence, it's entertaining and with good humour. The Blu-Ray edition looks and sounds quite decent, well worth the purchase.

Pink Cadillac

Eastwood has a sense of humor...........
Clint's bounty hunter is obviously a parody character based on his other roles. The movie was interesting and a little bizarre, but I think he was having fun with the production, and with the audience. While Peters is not generally leading lady material there is something appealing and vulnerable about the woman she portrays, and it plays well to Eastwood's sentimental tough guy. If you're looking for humor and action but don't expect a lot of plot depth or original story line it's an entertaining flick.

Pink Cadillac
Pink Cadillac is another great old Clint Eastwood movie. There was a lot of action through the whole thing and Bernadette Peters played a great supporting roll. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

Keeps getting sillier after a good beginning
The movie starts very well with a clever plot, excitement, and two attractive main characters. But with every quarter hour the plot gets sillier. Toward the end it becomes totally absurd, when the two main characters, armed with pistols, set out to confront a large number of heavily armed brutes. (The idea of reporting the baby's abduction to the FBI does not occur to anyone.)
